SOUTH CORNING, N.Y. — With yesterday’s 5-4 victory over South Jersey, every Morristown player has seen action in the Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament.

Yesterday’s lineup included Bryan Reed at second base, Chris Griffith at third base, Sean O’Donnell in left field and Casey Donnellon in right field. In the fifth inning, Morristown made wholesale substitutions, bringing in Matt Bicsak, Scott Saccomanno, Tim Coughlin and Bob Bilodeau to replace them.

Of the 15 team members, only Bicsak and Will Goldsmith have not started in a game. Goldsmith saw emergency duty as a replacement for catcher Dave Deane who was injured in the late innings of the team’s loss to New Castle, Del.

Who takes the mound

Manager Ed Davis has not decided who will pitch in today’s 5:30 p.m. game against East Lake, N.Y. He has the option of going three innings with Rob Ogilvie, who pitched in Sunday’s game and having someone else go another three innings, or letting either Donnellon, Evan Davis or Bilodeau start the game and do what they can. All three had pitching appearances during sectional and state play, but only Evan Davis has picked up a victory.

Ed Davis was more concerned with the baserunning mistakes his team has been making. Two players, Donnellon and Evan Davis, were thrown out at home and numerous other players made mistakes on the basepaths.

“We have to hit better and protect ourselves on the bases,” Davis said. “We got thrown out four times on the bases today.”

Big throw

Many of the teams in the tournament already know not to take the extra base when Evan Davis fields the ball. In the fifth inning, with Morristown ahead 5-2, South Jersey’s Frank Marciano singled to right center. South Jersey’s Chris Pino tried to go from first to third on the play, but he was shot down on a strong throw on the fly from Davis to Bilodeau, who tagged Pino out in plenty of time.

Rare occurrence

It’s not often you have to get out of the way of a chunk of flying metal during a baseball game, but Tom Olivo had to. The Morristown pitcher sidestepped the end of Bobby Marasa’s broken aluminum bat after he made contact with the ball during the second inning of yesterday’s game. Ogilvie fielded Marasa’s weak grounder and threw him out at first.
